Real Christmas trees

You can recycle real Christmas trees in your household compost bin. Cut your tree up as small as possible to speed up the composting process in your heap/bin.

Local councils have different arrangements for collecting real Christmas trees, as follows:

Babergh District Council - If you have a garden waste (brown) bin, during January you can leave your real Christmas tree beside your brown bin on collection day. Please remove all decorations. Please note: Large trees - trees over 7ft tall, or have a trunk thicker that 7cm - can not be collected. Instead, they can be taken to a recycling centre or a collection point. Full details and a list of collection points will be released soon.

East Suffolk Council - If you subscribe to the garden waste collection scheme in East Suffolk, you can place your real Christmas tree in your bin for collection.  The tree needs to be cut up so that the bin lid is completely closed and branches must not be any larger than 4cm (1.5inches) in diameter.

Ipswich Borough Council - There will be no brown bin collections on or between Monday 23 December – Monday 6 January. Brown bin collections will resume from Tuesday 7 January. Residents can leave real Christmas trees (please remove decorations) next to your brown bin ready for your next collection.

Mid Suffolk District Council - If you have a garden waste (brown) bin, during January you can leave your real Christmas tree beside your brown bin on collection day. Please remove all decorations. Please note: Large trees - trees over 7ft tall, or have a trunk thicker that 7cm - can not be collected. Instead, they can be taken to a recycling centre or a collection point. Full details and a list of collection points will be published soon.

West Suffolk Council - If you subscribe to the Garden Waste Collection Service you can put your real tree in your brown bin to be removed on scheduled collection days. Please make sure that the bin lid can close or the bin may not be collected, cut the tree if necessary.

Recycling Centres - You can also recycle real Christmas trees in the green container at any of Suffolk's 11 recycling Centres across the county.

Artificial Christmas trees (with decorations removed) can be placed in the metal container at Recycling centres - or in the Reuse Container if in good reusable condition.

Charity Christmas Tree Collection Schemes - There are schemes organised by local charities, which offer collection from the home and covering different areas of the county. These usually work by giving a donation for collection of your tree - with the charity benefiting from the proceeds. Details of local charities' collection schemes will be published here shortly.
