Suffolk County Council and its partner FCC Environment, who manage and run Suffolk’s recycling centres and waste transfer stations are putting in a planning application to make changes to the site at Lowestoft.
The proposed development, at the Hadenham Road site on South Lowestoft Industrial Estate will comprise the following:
- Cladding to be removed from the southern and eastern face of the existing building up to a height of 2m;
- New retaining wall to the southern boundary;
- Demolition of the existing office block area and installation of a new fire suppression system comprising pump house and water tank (10.8m tall);
- New standalone food waste transfer building
- Installation of new speed bumps and drainage penstock; and
- Creation of a new office and welfare block located at the north-west of the site.
These works are required to modernise and future proof the existing recycling centre and transfer station, increase fire safety and ensure the site is able to meet new regulatory requirements as set out in the Environment Act 2021 and the Resources and Waste Strategy for England.
The proposed site improvements are illustrated on the plan below.
During construction the recycling centre will be accessed in the usual way and will remain open during the duration of the works.
A planning application has been submitted (Autumn 2023) and works could commence towards the end of 2024.
